Top 10 web site promotion mistakes

  1. Keywords are not well planned. Each page does not have a targeted 2 or 3 keyword phrase that is used in key places.
  2. Keywords are over-used. No clear direction and unaware of the consequences for using keywords incorrectly.
  3. Over-optimized. Each page looks obviously optimized and you will be penalized by Google and others.
  4. Information is buried. New users often can not find a piece of information within a few clicks. If you do not get many phone calls or requests for information, you may want to reconsider your site design.
  5. The layout is not intuitive. People and search engine crawlers ( the robots that crawl the web and rank your web page) can not find all the important links.
  6. Contact information is hard to find. The moment a person decides they want to call or order, the correct type of contact information should be immediately obvious.
  7. Using a lot of pictures and flash or animation. Search engines rank text as most important because people use text when they perform searches in the search engines. Images can not be ranked.
  8. The web site only works in Internet Explorer. If Google, for instance, can't read the site in a text browser, then you won't rank as high.
  9. The web site uses frames. Many search engines have problems with frames. They often only index the frameset page and not the individual frames that contain the actual content. If you can not bookmark a page and return to it, this is a good indication of a badly designed page. The frameset page usually does not have META tags, title and enough content (text) to obtain a listing on a search engine.
  10. Using hidden keywords. Some Web designers, in order to get high rankings in the search engines, try to make their Web pages as keyword-rich as possible. They try to spam search engines by repeating keywords in the same color as the background color to make the text invisible to browsers and search engine spiders.

However, almost all search engines already know that trick. They will penalize or even blacklist your Web page if they determine that your page is trying to unfairly misrepresent its actual content. This tactic is commonly referred to as "spamming the search engines" or "spamdexing".

If your web site uses any of the following techniques you are not getting as many people looking at your web site as you normally could. Contact us for a free web site analysis.
