How to design a web site
No matter how attractive a web site's design, if it isn't practical, it's not doing its job. Design for the screen involves a new set of requirements to deal with and pitfalls to avoid. Please take some time to view the articles in this section that deal with planning, designing and common mistakes in web site design.
Important web design concepts
- Each page should use a targeted 2 or 3 keyword phrase several times.
- Each page should not be obviously optimized as you will be penalized by Google and other search engines.
- The web site should be simple yet informative, so important information is available within two clicks.
- The layout should be intuitive so people and search engine crawlers can find all the important links.
- Contact information should be on every page.
- Relevant text is the key. Do not use a lot of flash or images as most search engines rank text as most important.
- Less people will be able to view your web site if you use flash and/or animation and it will slow down your entire site.
- Accessible to all web browsers not just Internet Explorer.
- Accessible for different size screen resolutions including 800 x 600.
Some internet statistics:
- 75% of Canadians are online. 1 in 3 use a dial-up modem.
- A 20k file takes 3.6 seconds to download over a 56k modem. Save one of your web pages to your computer to view the entire page byte size including all graphics to see how slow the web page would take to load.
- 20% of users use a screen resolution of 800 x 600 or less.
