How popular is my web site?

How can I check if my web site is getting traffic?

Check page rank with the Google Toolbar

There are a number of ways to verify that your web site is getting visitors. One way to check for site popularity is to to use the Google Toolbar by downloading and installing the Google Toolbar. Each page that you visit when using Internet Explorer will show the PageRank in a green bar graph on the toolbar. The PageRank shows 0 to 10, where 10 is the highest. Read the details on Google Page Rank.

Find web page popularity using the Alexa Toolbar

A more accurate way to check web site ranking is to use the Alexa toolbar. If you have the Alexa toolbar installed you can view the page rank in the toolbar for every web page that you are visiting. This toolbar is limited to the Internet Explorer web browser. An Alexa rating of 1 is the highest and a larger number represents a lower ranking. A number of spyware removal programs reveal that the Alexa toolbar by Amazon is spyware. If you believe the Alexa toolbar is providing a valuable service to you, and you realize it is giving web site information to Amazon, then do not remove it as spyware.

Use the search engine itself to check how you are doing

Simply type into Google or Yahoo's search bar the search terms that someone with no insider knowledge would use to find you. Try to think of how people find you in the yellow pages for instance. For example type into Google your key services or products. If you are not in the first three pages there is a lot of opportunity to be made.

How to view who is linking to my web site?

To check who and how many people are linking to your website you can use Google itself. For example if you want to see who is linking to www.canada.com, simple type into the Google search bar"link:www.canada.com" of most search engines iincluding Google. Replace "canada.com" with your web site domain name. If you prefer you can use Google's advanced search "Page-Specific Search" section if you forget the exact syntax. Look for the input box called "Find pages that link to the page".

Note: that Google will only display back links (sites linking to yours) that they have indexed. If you know you have more web pages linking to yours, but they are not showing up in Google's link command, that is indicative of a problem. Contact us today!
